22-year-old Diamond Walker is an educator and entrepreneur. Diamond is a science middle school teacher and the owner of Girlngoals. Girlsngoals represents her, the girl with goals!

I was excited when Diamond was willing to do an interview with us. This year, 2019, I want to share other women's stories as well. It is important to share our struggles and success so we can learn from one another. While on my journey, I found myself asking other women how they stuck to their goals. I’ve asked for advice and even confessed my insecurities. Not only is Diamond an ambitious individual, I believe we can take something from this interview.

The Interview

1. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START BLOGGING?

I began to blog during my very last semester when I came up with the idea of having my own business & had grown very tired with balancing work and college. I also wanted to document my new life venture, I had just switched career paths a bit from working in health care to becoming a science teacher and the journey of handling my finances entering the real world.

2. WHAT IS THE MEANING BEHIND THE NAME OF YOUR BLOG?

Girlngoals is a business where I often feature blog posts and video content of myself. The name overall represents a girl with a will to meet her goals...whatever they may be. Being that I am the owner I thought of making it more personal by leaving it as “Girl” not many will recognize the importance of this but to me it signifies individuality, we don’t all have the same goals. Whatever hers may be she’s driven and working towards it. I’m here for that! To guide and bring together progress achievement.

3. WHAT IS THE SOLE PURPOSE OF YOUR BLOG?

The sole purpose of Girlngoals is to create a positive enviornment where girls can focus on becoming the best version of themselves, who we want to be when we grow up shouldn’t stop when we think we’re grown. Therefore, it is a brand to educate.

4. CURRENTLY, WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE BLOGGER? (PLEASE PROVIDE IG OR WEBSITE IF POSSIBLE).

This is hard! I like @kyrahstewart she’s such a cute lifestyle blogger and inspires me to be able to live the life through influencing by being myself. I also like @brandilou88 because she’s an attorney and content creator a 9-5 woman with a side hustle like me!

5. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER WOMEN WHEN IT COMES TO ACHIEVING THEIR GOALS?

Oh now this is right up my avenue haha, listen. Set your goals achievable to YOU. If you can’t handle working overdrive then slow down a bit but if you can then pedal to the metal! I realize that I was fortunate to get through college as quickly as I did without any major distractions/struggles but I know everyone doesn’t have that luxury, take the steps that feel comfortable to you. Lastly, write things down and do them, don’t care about anyone’s opinion. You either will succeed or learn a lesson along the way. A win, win. Period!

6. WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED?

Personally I have been motivated to break free from any hardships I have experienced between witnessing my parents love fall apart to watching my mother struggle to financially support me. I want so much for my future self & family, honestly it’s simple I want to live a healthy happy life. Financially and spiritually.

7. WHAT IS YOUR LIFETIME GOAL?

My lifetime goal is to own multiple businesses. From educational centers to owning multiple homes to rent to others.I just want to help and make money while doing so.

8. WHAT IS ONE OBSTACLE YOU OVERCAME THAT GOT YOU WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I mentioned, I was studying to be in health care and here’s why I had to move on. Well since I had enter college I knew I had to maximize the opportunity and that meant declaring something so at first I started off with declaring an Associates degree in liberal arts & science I took the classes everyone takes and researched like crazy.

I found out about Sonography, what’s usually know as ultrasound technology in other words. So there it was it sparked my interest and I was determined to be just that. I noticed that all I had to do was complete some pre-reqs in science before transferring from CSI and I could do so with my Associates degree and be admitted into my bachelors of sonography degree. I wanted to shine as a candidate, I would tour the college they offered this, email the director constantly, volunteer at local hospitals after classes and even prepare my own academic schedule because I had my mind set.

Well I did all of these things and was not accepted into the program, I was upset because this was my ticket to becoming financial secure (I thought) the program only accepted applicants once a year and it was time for me to decide .. do I wait a whole year or go for something else. I went for it! Whole heartedly because what I didn’t tell you was that the director suggested for me to pick a different career path which infuriated me. I now attend Graduate school for dirt cheap with my job paying majority and have no student loans. I became Girlngoals. It was the best decision I made, financially and business wise.

9. IF YOU COULD GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF ADVICE WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I’m pretty happy where I am in life. The only thing I wish I could’ve done more of was have fun. If I can go back I’d tell myself to just enjoy being a kid.

10. WHEN IT IS TIME FOR SELF-CARE WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO?

Sleeeeep lol I am exhausted all the time, sleep is definitely my first step to self-care.

11. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ANYONE GOING TO COLLEGE?

Anyone going to college please have a plan, know how you’re going to tackle student loans. Preparing by working and saving. Where I lived everyone talked down on our local college but I would then realize everyone resorting there in the long run, CUNY may be local but it’s still a 4 year college and cheaper than most colleges and that’s all that really matters in the end. Another thing, always find a job either close to home or close to campus because campus will be your second home anyway! Lol, this helps saving on gas/metro for transportation and just easier balancing work hours.
